Summer is just around the corner;
the kids are out and oil prices are increasing!

Get your exercise!
Walking and biking are excellent for cardio fitness as well as overall health. Be sure your water intake exceeds your normal intake in this heat. Make sure to replenish with electrolytes and minerals! (A suggestion would be the product Smartwater.)
You might find yourself using more personal care products such as deodorant and perfumes. Be careful what you use! Not all ingredients have to be listed according to the FDA.
When selecting a deodorant be sure that there is no aluminum or zinc. many of our clients have shared the alternatives that they prefer-Weleda, Aubrey Organics, Berts, and Tropical traditions. Have fun shopping!
Summer time is also when our cabinets might be full of "goodies" containing sugar. Sugar is not always bad. Our attention should be on the kind of sugar we ingest. A healthy sugar intake will help maintain a balanced blood sugar level. For more information on this area of nutrition, please consult with our holistic nutrition specialist, Debra Roche.

March/April 2008 Newsletter

March 1st, 2008

Spring is here and ReNewLife Wellness Center (RNLWC) has many new things to share with you!

This is the time to reinstate those New Year Resolutions. Remember those strong promises we made to ourselves with such strong conviction at the beginning of the year? Needless to say, despite our well intentioned plans, our busy lives often get in the way. DO NOT FRET! Awareness is always the first step, and now we must implement a plan. You have stated what you want health wise in your life, now let us help you put a successful plan into action!. It would be our pleasure to support you in any way possible as you strive for a healthier, more balanced, and therefore happier you.
It is far from being a surprise that the majority of the population has weight loss as their number one goal. As important as external appearance is in our society, there is an underlying consideration that is even more important…. what is happening on the inside. Most people think if you are thin, you must be healthy. That is not true. We believe if the inside is healthy, then your body will conform to what it was intended. At RNLWC we focus on the inside out. When the digestive system is functioning properly you feel better.
Our weight loss program is not about "dieting." It is about teaching you how to develop a lifestyle of quality choices and actions that allows your body to naturally follow, eventually attaining a level of health that makes you feel more alive than ever before. Weight loss comes as a natural effect. Taking weight off of your body can be a positive experience. After your body goes through its initial detoxing and brief experience of transformation, you will have more energy, more clarity, and a deepened quality of sleep that will help give you the motivation to embrace this way of life. Let us show you how to embrace your life like never before.
When looking at weight loss from the inside out, your program will be more satisfying and healthier. When the inside is functioning the way it should, the body can do what it needs to do and YOU feel great! Two of the most important areas in our approach are proper digestion and ridding the body of toxins. If you are not digesting your food properly, the body does not know what to do with it and it stays in our system. This creates "fluff" around the middle and extra poundage in other areas. Toxins are similar. If they are not removed the body attaches water and other types of molecules to protect itself from the harm that these toxic molecules can cause. And guess what happens if this occurs…. You got it… more weight gain. When these toxins increase, our energy levels decrease as well as our well being.
Now you are ready to embark on this health journey…. where do you start? One of the most important first steps is eliminating toxic foods and implementing the HOPE formula (High Fiber, 3-6-9 Oils, Probiotics, and Enzymes.)
Another area of high toxicity intake is our environment. We have more toxins in the environment than ever before. We take them in through our skin, food, and breath. When our foods are not supporting our digestive system your eliminating organ, the colon, may not work properly. Those of you that know me, know how passionate I am about the colon!
The colon is a muscle that is as long as you are tall. It expands and contracts. It is important that an individual eliminates as many times as they eat a meal. So, if you are eating three quality meals a day, you should be eliminating three times a day. How many of us actually do that? Most people eliminate only once a day. Take a moment to think about this. We normally eat three meals daily. With 365 days a year, that means we should be eliminating 1095 times in one year! So, if you are in the status quo of once a day, what happened to the rest of the 730 meals?!?
If there is an overabundance of food left in the colon it gets stored and ends up creating toxins. The toxins are absorbed through the portal vein leading to the liver which adds to additional stress because the liver is dealing with toxins from all areas in our daily lives.
Friendly bacteria and unfriendly bacteria also reside in the colon. The ratio is 80% good bacteria and 20% bad bacteria. We need both in our system, but if the ratio is imbalanced ill health can occur. The friendly bacteria is commonly known as Probiotics, which means “for life.” It helps us stay healthy. Most people believe that yogurt is the best source, however, many brands are pasteurized and have a lot of added sugar losing its effectiveness. We suggest taking capsules or liquid form of flora to get the amount that your body needs.

We welcome all questions regarding our innovative weight loss programs. Our clients are incredibly important and dear to us. The reward of seeing someone's smile and glow of health means more to us that mere words could ever express. We look forward to hearing from you so that we can support you in obtaining your health goals.

January/February 2008 Newsletter

January 1st, 2008

Volume 1, Number 2
Happy New Year!!!
Thoughts from Suzanne
A new year is upon us. Many of us focus on the opportunities and possibilities that a new year of life brings.  The celebration of life could not exist without the human experiences of happiness and contentment.  Without a quality foundation of health, in all its beautiful and wondrous forms, optimal health and happiness could never be experienced.  Let us at ReNew Life Wellness Center guide you on your wonderful health journey.
Out with the old and in with the new.  (And in the case of all the happenings at ReNew Life Wellness Center we mean that literally!)  The hustle and bustle of the holidays is tapering off and once again we come face to face with our self-improvement resolutions.
We will continue on with our monthly educational tidbits on the channels of elimination.  I will elaborate on our monthly organ, the liver.
Our liver is the main detoxification organ of the body.  It weighs approximately 4 ½  pounds and can regenerate itself over time.  The liver processes the toxins from our environment, food, medications, furniture, and clothing.  It is amazing what the liver can do, even when operating at half of its capacity.
The liver is usually overworked because it is busy breaking down toxins so our body can process them, then eliminate them. We process toxins within our body (endotoxins) and also toxins outside our body in the environment (exotoxins.)  We absorb, ingest, and inhale toxins daily from the polluted air, water, and soil.  Our bodies are also exposed to toxins in the food that we eat and the products we apply to our skin.
Toxins are produced inside our bodies because of poor digestion, improper pH and an imbalance of good gut flora.  When there is this imbalance in the intestinal tract, the toxins permeate the intestinal wall and reenter the bloodstream.  If our livers are not properly processing toxins, they are stored in body tissue such as our organs.  Disease can often be the end result.
The liver in Chinese medicine is also the “anger” organ.
So, love thy liver!!!

What are some of the things that you can do for a healthier you this year?  One of the most common complaints from people is the lack of vitality and luster. These are two incredibly important characteristics that health is supposed to bring.  Countless times I have encountered people frustrated after following strict health regimens of exercise and dieting, and other things just in the attempt to feel better.  Amidst all of the hard work and dedication to attaining optimal health, what is often forgotten is the importance of removing toxins from the body.  We forget about all the chemicals that exist in our environment, our food, and our water – just to name a few of the many sources.  As these toxins build up in our bodies, not only do we feel bad, but our body buffers these toxins by retaining water and fat. So, let’s get rid of some toxins!!!

Start the New Year off Right with These Easy Detoxification Tips

Eat Fiber!!!  As Brenda Watson so wisely states in her book ¬The Fiber 35 Diet:  Nature’s Weight Lose Secret, soluble fiber acts like a sponge.  This fiber sponge then soaks up toxins in the GI tract and is later eliminated.  Insoluble fiber doesn’t break down in the digestive tract.  Instead it acts similar to a brook, sweeping the GI tract pushing toxins through.
Do a colonic.  This type of health therapy allows old and unhealthy contents in the colon to be removed with warm water.  When this material is removed, toxins are able to be removed more efficiently.
Drink water!!!  (1/2 of your body weight in ounces.  For example if you weigh 160 lbs you should drink 80 oz. of water.
Exercise!  As you exercise, you actually sweat out toxins.  Exercise moves the lymphatic system which is responsible for gathering toxins which later transfers these toxins to the blood, then liver, and out through the colon or bladder.
Use an infrared sauna.  Another great way to sweat out toxins is through spending some time in an infrared sauna.

Take nutritional detoxification supplements.  These types of supplements help support the kidneys, lungs, skin, lymphatic system, and liver.  These are all key contributors in detoxification of your body.

As your body starts to eliminate more and more of its toxic build up, you will be amazed at how much differently you feel.

Specials of the Month
$10 dollars off any colon therapy treatment, ionic foot detox, or infared sauna treatment.

September/October 2007 Newsletter

September 1st, 2007

Volume 1, Number 4

Thoughts From Suzanne

In our last newsletter we spoke about our circulatory system. We have another circulatory system called the lymph system. This system is our defensive line for fighting off infection or foreign particles in our body. The lymphatic system is an important component of our immune system.

The transparent fluid of the lymph system contains white blood cells, which help fight infection. Ever notice swollen glands in your throat region while you have a cold? This indicates that your lymph system is in action fighting off the foreign substances (antigens) in your body. The lymph system has its own filtration organ (the spleen) which also stores lymphocytes or immune cells.

Similar to blood vessels, the lymph vessels have valves and muscles to promote the movement of lymph fluid. However, the lymph system is a one-way valve pathway moving upwards towards the head and is constantly fighting against gravity for movement because it does not get “pumped” like our blood by the heart. It depends on physical movement for the necessary pumping it needs to circulate. Massage, deep breathing, various vigorous forms of exercise (i.e. walking, rebounding) will all work to increase lymphatic flow.

The other elimination organ is the lungs. Our lungs facilitate the exchange of carbon dioxide (waste product from the cells of our body) and oxygen within the blood. Oxygen is carried to our cells from the lungs to be used for fuel.

Inside our lungs are hair-like projections called cilia which help protect against and removed inhaled toxins. According to the University of California, people living or working in the city inhale over 20 million particles of foreign matter a day from items such as pollutants from car exhaust, chemical plants, tobacco smoke, and excess dust to name a few. We are surrounded by synthetic materials that make their way into our bodies by breathing, eating and drinking fluids. It is important to keep our elimination channels clean and open. And, of course, we must also supply our bodies with nutrients from good, healthy organic foods.

Sharing Through Education

Everyday holistic ideas for health are making it into our newspapers and television. The St. Petersburg Times June 26th edition article “Don’t Forget Your Fiber” was right on! The general public needs to be educated and as my mentor, Brenda Watson says, “sharing through education” and that’s what ReNew Life Wellness is all about. So please feel free to e-mail me your comments or questions at sgray15@tampabay.rr.com.

July/August 2007 Newsletter

July 1st, 2007

Volume 1, Number 3
Thoughts From Suzanne

In our last newsletter, we touched upon the channels of elimination. This included blood, lymphatic system, lungs, kidneys, skin, large intestine and liver. I mentioned in the previous newsletter that I would spend more time on each elimination organ. The largest organ, the skin, has many functions. The skin protects from abrasions and infection. It secretes salts, waste and water. We feel through the nerve endings in our skin such as temperature, touch, pleasure and pain. To assist the health of your skin dry skin brushing (also known as body brushing) is very beneficial. It exfoliates (or removes) dead skin cells so the skin can breath. A natural bristle brush is used for this procedure. Do it before your shower or bath and you will have skin as soft as a baby’s bottom! Used before stepping into the infra-red sauna, body brushing will allow the toxins to be released more readily while “sweating.” There is a specific body brushing pattern to follow so if you have never experienced body brushing, contact me for more information.

Were you aware that exercise can actually benefit the skin? As circulation increases, so does the delivery of nutrients to the skin, not to mention the release of toxins while you sweat. According to Dr. Audrey Kunin, M.D., author or “Dermadector Skinstruction Manual,” exercise decreases stress levels thus supporting the skin to make collagen, which is necessary for healthier look skin (no wrinkles and lines).

Your blood is the fluid of your circulatory system. The other two major components of the circulatory system are your heart and blood vessels. The blood, pumped by the heart, travels through thousands of miles of blood vessels to transport nutrients, water, oxygen and waste products to and from the cells of your body.

Blood is life. It is the messenger that carries oxygen from your lungs to body tissue and carbon dioxide from body tissue to the lungs. Blood is the fluid that nourishes our body. Keep it clean with good organic foods, vitamins and minerals. Not everyone’s blood looks alike or has the same blood type. If you are curious about what your blood looks like or what your blood type is, come see us.

May/June 2007 Newsletter

May 1st, 2007

Volume 1, Number 2

Thoughts From Suzanne

We are bombarded with toxins from our environment everyday.  The food we eat, materials we wear, what we sit upon and the list goes on!  We can do something about it.  As my mentor, Brenda Watson, has always said – sharing knowledge through education is the key to improving people’s lives.  The more knowledge you have, the better decisions you can make for yourself and family.  We started this newsletter because it is our passion and responsibility to inform our clients!

There are no if, ands, or butts (no pun intended!) about it, we live in a toxic world.  Let’s look at some statistics gathered over the years:

•    1999 – over 40 million tons of hazardous waste was produced
•    2002 – 24,379 U.S. facilities released 4.79 billion pounds of toxins into the atmosphere.  72 million pounds were carcinogens.
•    Since 1980 childhood asthma increased more than 40%
•    Cancer rates were 1 in 50 in the early 1900’s.  Cancer rates are now 1 in 3.
•    Babies born today have over 200 toxins in their tiny bodies.

Channels of Elimination (huh?)

In the next few newsletters, I will share with you the channels of elimination and explain briefly their importance and how they work together as a team to keep our bodies functioning properly.  The channels are your blood, lymphatic system, lungs, kidneys, skin, large intestine and liver.  These channels of elimination are very important and the level of efficiency is vital for total body detoxification.

The skin is our largest organ and allows toxins to be removed by sweating.  People vary as to how long it takes to break a sweat.  Exercise and body brushing are ways to help you break that sweat!

Your lungs allow you to breathe air and with the exhalation release toxins from your body in the form of carbon dioxide.  Can you imagine the additional stress people put on their lungs from smoking or from breathing second hand smoke?

The lymphatic system and our blood (circulatory) are major transporters of the detoxification process.  The oxygen which is necessary for oxidation or burning toxins is carried through our vascular (or blood) system.  The blood acts as a carrier of toxins to our eliminating organs.  The cleaner our blood is the healthier our cellular health is.

Our lymphatic system is one that does not get a lot of attention.  Yet it is so important to our health.  Ever get swollen nodules under your jaw when you were sick?  Well, that’s your lymph system in action.  It is actually trying to get rid of toxins!

The lymphatic is very unique because it has no pump like the circulatory system (i.e. the heart) and it moves in an upward direction.  It relies on us by the deep breathing and the exercise we do to help it move the toxins out.  (Our immune system depends on our lymph to be active and remove the microorganisms.)  The lymph eliminates the poisons from the cells by its movement.  An excellent exercise for moving the lymph is rebounding.  (Contact us for more information on rebounding.)

The last two organs, the liver and the colon (large intestine) have a vital role as well.  In our July/August newsletter, you will learn more about the liver and large intestines – probably more than you wanted to!  The liver can regenerate itself and is the largest internal organ.  It has over 500 functions and is our main detoxifying organ.  The large intestine is a muscle that expands and contracts.  It eliminates toxins and materials in the form of feces.

Thoughts From Suzanne

Welcome to the bi-monthly publication from ReNew Life Wellness Center!  I look forward to visiting with you every other month and, hopefully, bringing you helpful information.

Everyone is talking about fiber today.  And why not?  It is so essential for good health!  Fiber can help you lose weight, improve the function of digestion, help lower heart disease, help reduce the risk of cancer, balance blood sugar and improve bowel movements.

You have to have fiber in your diet to allow the bowels to move.  The bowels are the foundation of our health.  Just like the plumbing in your house.  They need to be cleansed several times a year because of possible build-up.  Makes sense, doesn’t it?

The US RDA and most experts recommend a fiber intake of 35 grams daily for the healthy adult.  The average American today only consumes 10 – 15 grams of fiber.

There are two kinds of fiber – soluble and insoluble.  Soluble fiber dissolves in water and forms a gel.  It can be found in fruits, vegetables and grains.  Examples would be apples, pears, plums, beans, oat, legumes and nuts.  Insoluble fiber does not break down in water and therefore acts as a bulking and roughage agent.  By adding bulk, one’s bowel movements will increase and reduce the transit time.  Foods such as dried beans, whole grains, seeds and vegetables are examples of insoluble fiber.

Try to get your 35 grams of fiber from a variety of foods daily.  Good fiber supplements will contain approximately 65% – 75% insoluble fiber to 25% soluble fiber.  We have several fiber supplements to choose from at ReNew Life Wellness Center.  A great book about fiber is “The Fiber Diet – Nature’s Weight Loss Secret” by Brenda Watson, C.N.C., with Leonard Smith, M.D.  Have questions?  Give us a call or better yet – come on in and see us!

Increase your fiber!
One easy way to increase your daily fiber intake is to add fiber such as flax meal, rice bran or various types of fruits to your morning protein drink.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know that March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month?  At ReNew Life Wellness Center we are all about AWARENESS and we believe that prevention is always the best medicine – be it traditional or alternative. Colon Cancer is a treatable disease if caught early and you can help ensure your continued good health by having a preventative screening for possible colon and rectal problems. This becomes important as we get older. The National Institute of Health suggests that all men and women age 50 or older should have a Colonoscopy.  Colon Cancer is the third most common cancer in the western world and the second leading cause of death.  If you should notice a change in your bowel habits, observe blood in your stool or unexplained weight loss, always consult your doctor.  Being aware of your health can prevent illness.  At ReNew Life Wellness Center we educate you so you can make intelligent decisions for your own good health.  How empowering!

Welcome Dr. Robert Theobald, D.O.

ReNew Life Wellness Center is proud to announce our partnership with Dr. Robert Theobald of Comprehensive Colorectal Care.  Comprehensive Colorectal Care specializes in Colorectal Endoscopy, Rectal Surgery & Diseases of the Colon and Rectum.

ReNew Life is now operating two colon therapy rooms at Dr. Theobald’s office located at 4809 N. Armenia Avenue, Suite 220, Tampa, FL.  We are working in conjunction with Dr. Theobald to not only work with patients suffering with digestive issues but also with patients undergoing colonoscopies.  Yes, there is an alternative to the traditional method of medication to cleanse the bowel prior to a colonoscopy.  We are offering a body-friendly alternative that offers no down time from your daily activities!  A recent study done by Joseph J. Fiorito, M.D. and presented at the 2006 American College of Gastroenterology Annual Scientific Meeting compared colon hydrotherapy with the traditional medications used for elective colonoscopies.  The study concluded that colon hydrotherapy is considerably better in its quality of colon cleansing, overall tolerance, comfort and convenience in preparation for elective colonoscopies than the traditional polyethylene glycol-electrolyte lavage and aqueous sodium phosphate.

We believe that holistic practices and an allopathic approach can come together.  Colon hydrotherapy is helpful for prevention of disease and maintaining good health.  Colonoscopies are used as a diagnostic tool for Colon Cancer screening.  Both Suzanne and Dr. Theobald feel that together they can provide their knowledge and services to the public.  We will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding this very important issue.

Time to Spring Clean Our Bodies

Springtime is just around the corner and just as we “spring-clean” our homes, spring is also the time to detoxify our bodies.  According to “Mr. Webster,” detoxify means “remove poisons from.”  But what is the best cleanse for the body?  Not everyone needs the same cleanse at the same time.  By evaluating your body’s terrain and using other assessment tools, we can determine what cleanse would be best for you.

As many of you know, Brenda Watson has been my friend and mentor for many years.  I really learned how important detoxification and cleansing is, especially today.  Environmental toxins have increase tremendously.  Our bodies are exposed to many toxins in the air we breathe, the clothes we wear, items in our homes and more.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency, over 40 million tons of hazardous waste was produced in 1999.  Can you imagine what it is today?!  According to Dr. Sherry A. Rogers, M.D., babies are born with over 100 toxins in their little bodies.

Therefore, we must build our immune systems and in order to do that we must detoxify and cleanse our bodies.

The first step is awareness.  Over the next few newsletters, we will share information to acquaint yourselves with your bodies.  We have 7 channels of detoxification:  lungs, liver, colon, kidneys, skin, blood and lymph.  The first five are organs and they must be functioning and communicating with each other to get the maximum out of your cleanse.  The blood and lymph are fluids, each having the capacity to get rid of toxins or retain toxins.  By eating organic food, drinking fresh water, using herbal and natural programs, you can greatly improve your health.

A New Addition to the ReNew Life Wellness Center Family

Dr. Kramer has given birth to her first child and we are joyful in welcoming the very first ReNew Life Wellness Center baby into our family.  Please welcome Jolie Kramer, born to Liana & Jim Kramer on March 1, 2007 at 1:26 pm, 6 lbs. 3 ozs., 19 inches.  Dr. Kramer will be on maternity leave for approximately 3 months but will still be assisting Brandi Stewart who is filling in for Dr. Kramer during her leave of absence.

Brandi and Dr. Kramer have been associates and friends for the past three years.  She has been interning with Dr. Kramer since October 2006 in preparation of Dr. Kramer’s leave of absence.  Brandi became passionate about holistic health when she was in her mid twenties after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and not finding any answers within traditional medicine.  In 1998 she started working at her local health food store and managed Healthway Natural Foods for 6 years in the Maryland area.  While there she was able to assist others find their own paths to wellness by way of dietary and holistic changes.  After finding success with dietary changes, detoxing and cleansing, Brandi sought out Brenda Watson and asked if she could work and study under her at Renew Life Formulas.  Brandi was hired and moved to Florida in 2004.  So began her journey as an educator for Renew Life Formulas and later for Enzymedica, Inc.  Brandi is certified in Live Blood Cell Analysis.  We are fortunate to have Brandi on board!
